The purpose of the fund is to finance travel at any academic conference relevant to the applicant's work that falls within the domain of EPS interests as defined by the content of the Society's journals. Preference will be given to attendance at meetings of the Experimental Psychology Society. Grants to attend non-EPS conferences are normally given only to those making a presentation. Grants are strictly limited to £500
Applicants must be (a) registered for a postgraduate research degree and be within 4 years of initial registration (or part-time equivalent), or (b) postdoctoral workers who are within 2 years of having received their doctorate, or (c) retired EPS members. Every application from a non-member should be sponsored by an EPS member. Potential applicants who do not have a sponsor in the EPS are invited to contact the Hon Secretary for advice. A condition of the award is that travel must originate from, or be destined to, the UK and it is understood that travel will be to/from the applicant's normal residential address whilst attending or working at the institution where they have their primary affiliation. Where this is not the case prior approval must be sought from the EPS administrator.
Grindley Grants are awarded to individuals. Reimbursements are made to the individual applicant, and it is not possible to reimburse institutions or third parties. Applicants should not use Grindley Grants as a method of recovering all or part of expenditure already incurred or underwritten by institutions. Applicants may apply for a Grindley Grant to cover one part of a larger expense, for which other funders cover other elements. However, where other sources of funding are available, the reimbursement claim must relate only to the part of expenditure originally applied for in the Grindley Grant application.
The fund will finance (a) travel by the cheapest convenient means available (for the duration of the conference unless pre-agreed with the EPS administrator), and (b) accommodation at a maximum rate of £60 per day for non-EPS meetings and the January EPS (which may be varied only in exceptional circumstances). For April and July EPS meetings the maximum amount will be limited to cover the cost of the local accommodation provided, when such accommodation is available. When local accommodation has not been provided by meeting organisers, the maximum rate of £60 per day will apply. Providing funds are available there are normally no limits on the number of grants an applicant may receive to attend EPS meetings, but grants for attendance at non-EPS conferences will be limited to a maximum of one per applicant. The fund cannot pay for registration fees or for expenses also reimbursed from another source.
The EPS assumes that the recipient of the Grindley Grant will have in place their own travel insurance to cover the costs of any unforeseen alterations to their travel arrangements.
Applications for Grindley Grants may be made at any time by completing the downloadable MS Word form. The completed form should be emailed to
as a single PDF file of the aggregated signed application material or sent in hard copy to the address below. Please do not send a hard copy through the post if you have already emailed your submission.

Department of Psychology
Availability of finance from other sources should be mentioned. Application forms should reach the EPS Administrator not less than 4 weeks before the date of a non-EPS conference, or 2 weeks before an EPS meeting, in order to allow time for handling and any correspondence. Retrospective applications cannot be considered.
Claims for reimbursement should be sent in hard copy with original receipts to the EPS Administrator at the above address within two months of the meeting using the downloadable Travel and Accommodation Expenses Form here. Please note: no receipts - no reimbursement.
